the revolution
Words are changing the world right now. Not that they haven’t always been a powerful force, but there are certainly moments in the evolution of communication that seem to add an extra surge in verbal energy. The connections people are making over the internet are incredible, and the combined power of millions of keystrokes are overthrowing governments, affecting social change, and bringing formerly-alienated voices into one, beautiful chorus. Agree with the outcomes or don’t, but it’s difficult to argue the strength of the written word. Not since the advent of the printing press has the world been more open to the pen’s influence.
the inspiration
The power of writing certainly extends beyond things like war and combined social energy. Words have the power to heal wounds and inspire greatness in those we share them with. Something as simple as a post-it in a lunchbox can shift a day’s vantage point from sullen to smiling. Everyone with a great mom knows that, don’t they? But in an age of texting and tweeting, it’s easy to lose this personalized touch. The people who write those lunchbox notes tend to overlook the beauty of a well-placed text message, and those who spend all day texting tend to ignore the importance of each quickly-typed character. What we write is a huge part of how we affect others, and our words, whether typed or scribbled, travel deep into the core of those who read them.
the creation
Writing is more than a form of communication or means to connection. It is, and always has been, an art form. The beauty of a well-crafted sentence can echo in the mind of its reader, long after the page is turned or the laptop closed. Those who spend time creating this beauty are typically afflicted with a too-great awareness of this effect, and scrutinize their work like it has been chosen to grace the Sistine Chapel. There is serious stuff going on behind lines of text–stuff that gets put in history books and chiseled on monuments. It crosses into every line of work, and into every phase of the human experience. If something is worth thinking about, it’s worth putting into a word picture.
